Hundreds of abortion rights supporters gathered in New York City’s Foley Square to protest the Supreme Court’s vote to strike down the Roe v. Wade which gives women the right to have an abortion. They were joined by accompanied by government leaders and celebrities, including New York State Attorney General Letita James and comedian Amy Schumer.
The leaked draft opinion, obtained and published by Politico, detailed the Court’s majority decision to remove nearly 50 years of federal constitutional protections of reproductive rights set by Roe v. Wade and upheld by the 1992 decision, Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote. “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision…”
If repealed, access to abortion would not undergo a federal ban, but instead would grant individual states the ability to heavily restrict or outlaw the procedure.
